They were known as the no account Raines boys, but they ve grown into successful, honorable men and everything they have, they ve fought for tooth and nail Now each of the three brothers has one last obstacle to overcome to claim what s eluding them loveSecrets don t stay buried long in cattle country Sarah Allen, the beautiful girl who humiliated Jackson Raines in high school, is back in town Not so long ago, she couldn t wait to leave Wind Canyon, Wyoming, in her dust But, recently widowed, she has nowhere else to go and finds herself on Jackson s ranch And despite everything, Jackson s They re not taking no for an answer, but what they will take is the one thing she has left her daughter Jackson s the only one who might be able to save little Holly and bring her home Good book that kept me interested to the end Sarah has returned to Wind Canyon after the murder of her husband She had left town in search of a better life and thought she found it, only to find that her husband was abusive and a crook She has sold everything to pay his debts but is still being harassed by people who are looking for something he had She has gotten a job with the local paper and rented a cottage are looking for something he had She has gotten a job with the local paper and rented a cottage for herself and her daughter on one of the local ranches Then she discovers that the ranch belongs to Jackson Raines, the guy she treated so badly back in high school Jackson and his brothers were the local bad boys Their parents were drunks and the boys were constantly in trouble Jackson had left town after high school and ended up making a boatload of money He then came home and bought a ranch He s not at all happy to find Sarah on his ranch, as he still remembers his humiliation at her hands She appears to have changed, but he s not inclined to trust her However, when trouble follows her to Wyoming he steps in to help her.I liked Jackson He is the type of man that can t walk away from someone in trouble Though he isn t sure whether he can fully trust her, he can see that Sarah is in bad trouble I liked the way that he wants to help her find out who is after her and why He is also still attracted to her which adds to his desire to help her As he learnsabout what her marriage was like he s impressed by the strength she showed to survive it Though he hasn t had any plans to marry thetime he spends with Sarah and her daughter thethe idea appeals I really liked the close relationship he has with his brothers.Sarah was a little harder to like, at least at the beginning Her treatment of Jackson in the past had been needlessly cruel which didn t set a good tone I was a bitsympathetic to her asdetails of her marriage were revealed It was a little hard to believe in her quick relationship with Jackson as I expected her marriage to have hadof an impact on her feelings about men She comes to love him very much, but fears what her troubles could do to him so she tries to end things She also hasissues from her marriage than she has told him about. The mystery itself was pretty well done Each time that Jackson and Sarah think that they have made progress something else is uncovered that leads them on another chase There were a few things that went on that stretched believability a bit, but overall kept me involved The final confrontation at the end was definitely intense and kept me wondering if everyone was going to come through it okay There was a very interesting twist involving the identity of her husband s murderer that I really didn t see coming It has been a while since I have disliked a book this much.I really wanted to like this book In fact I ordered the second book in the series with the anticipation of enjoying this first one But the fact is I hated it I could not get into it at all I never got attached to the characters and the storyline never jived with me.First of all, Sarah was beyond cruel to Jackson in High School She process She was evil Jackson still harbors, and rightly so, a lot of resentment towards Sarah Yet the author expects to me to believe that he puts that all behind him and forgives her fully after a very poor apology I didn t buy it.There really wasn t any chemistry between Jackson and Sarah, yet Jackson walked around with an erection 99.9% of the time If I had a dollar for every time the author spoke of Jackson s erection I would be taking my family out to a very nice dinner tonight My storyline problems stemmed from the fact that I felt like everything was too far fetched I can t really get into details without offering spoilers, but there was stealing evidence from a crime scene and a police helicopter that was deployed on command from a civilian within a 20 minute period of time Oh, and lets not forget the FBI forcing Sarah to investigate a criminal matter I realize this is a fiction book, but come on There was also a side storyline involving loggers that really served zero purpose, except to maybe voice the author s opinion on commercial loggers I don t know.I am really bummed I have the second book, because I really don t want to read it But being full of quirks which include finishing books I can t tolerate and reading books just because they have been purchased and are already on my shelf, I will I am hoping that the author stepped things up for the second book, because this one was a dismal failure.Cherise Everhard, April 2011 I received this copy of the book as an ARC from NetGalley It has been a while since I d read any Kat Martin and her last few books seeing the interactions between Jackson and Holly her daughter , as well as the supporting characters Nan, Jimmy and his sons, as well as Jackson s brothers The mystery suspense part sort of just fizzled out for me it was like it kept going and going with no solution until miraculously it was solved with about 15 pages to spare.I m ambivalent as to whether i ll read the next 2 books in the trilogy, the only brother to sort of interest me is Dev, but the former spec ops guy is also an overdone story arc, so it will be interesting to see if Ms Martin can come up with something unique.Overall, i d give the story a 3 so it is inline with the goodreads stars and would probably recommend to people who like lite suspense with their romance, but not the other way around My thoughts and feelings while reading 0.0% Ive recieved the 11 book in this series from netgalley and although its the first in an interconnecting series I dont like starting series half way through haha excited to start this book though I like books with kids, I havent read a western in while and Im in the mood for some suspense D5.0% Sarah hadn t just said no Aww Poor Jackson I hope they talk about the past soon I really think Im going to love this one Against the Wind2 StarsSynopsis Following the murder of her abusive husband, Sarah Allen returns to her home town in Wyoming to start Jackson Raines, the man she rejected and humiliated in high school, and then when her husband s enemies become convinced that she has something they want and are not above kidnapping Sarah s daughter to get it.Review Starts out really well but becomes exceedingly far fetched as the book progresses There are just too many individual storylines In addition to the main plot, in which the heroine has not one but four men out to get her for different reasons, there are another two side stories The first involves a tiresome romance between Sarah s friend and Jackson s foreman and the second centers on illegal logging, which is completely irrelevant and unrelated to the main story Two of these various plot threads remain unresolved at the conclusion Maybe they will come to an end in the next installment but quite frankly I m not interested enough to find out The main characters are well fleshed out and have an intense chemistry but I did not feel the romance While Jackson s caring and sensitivity make him an especially appealing character, Sarah is annoying and distant I found her need to keep secrets and her inability to trust Jackson with the truth irritating, and actually felt that he deserved better I also thought that his initial resentment toward her for the way she treated him in high school was resolved far too easily with a rather weak apology. In general, the book is well written but the flashback scenes in which Sarah remembers what happened to her husband are extremely repetitive, in fact, the author just copies them word for word each time with a few details added There is also very little build up of tension and suspense, and I kept waiting for the something significant to happen Overall, a very disappointing read and one of the few books that get my 2 star rating I may not be reading anyin the series AGAINST THE WIND Book 1 in the Raines Brothers Trilogy by Kat Martin12 10 Mira Mass Market Paperback, 400 pages ISBN 13 9780778329190A wonderful wind a small newspaper She has rented a lovely cottage and knows a clean slate will be best. What Sarah does not know is the past of her youth is going to be facing her in the form of Jackson Raines the boy who loved her and she threw away He is still hurt all these years later from that rejection but it doesn t take 5 minutes for the pain of youth to be replaced by the passion of adulthood Jackson knows better than to trust her again but it is so hard not to when she is so venerable and beautiful. But leaving trouble behind and that actually happening is easier said than done especially for Sarah Her late husband s many criminal friends have ways to find her and threaten her which is exactly what they do They want the disk they believe she has and will stop at nothing to get it Sarah is not sure what to do but Jackson calls in his brothers for help because he is positive whatever problem he can t solve they will.Thetime Sarah and Jackson spend together thethey are not only drawn to one them an unstoppable force for love.Writing a western romance isthan just knowing the lay of the land or the history it is grabbing the flavor for the people and surroundings Kat Martin has completed captured that with Sarah and Jackson s story in showcasing these two people and the lives they lead in a part of the country that has its own pace and feel to life This story brings romance, suspense and the most wonderful feeling that reminds us we are all suckers for romantic ending Several problems with this book, most stemming from the suspense part Sarah is in danger not just subtle right off about her husband s murder or that she has been harassed to turn over a disk containing information about her husband being blackmailed After her grandmother s house gets broken into Several
