Pipe Dreams: A tale of seduction and redemption For an action packed novel , the pacing is all off It s downright boring There was no character development, the dialogue was static, scenes could have been moved around to help with the pacing and with creating an attachment to the characters. There were some interesting bits, and the storyline itself is interesting Throughout, there are some really well written lines It just didn t come together for me. However, when Blake gets to China, he getsthan he has bargained for Nick is thrown into a world of a new language, culture, and new ways of thinking.I want to start the review by saying there are many trigger warnings for this There is sexual assault, drug usage, suicide, detailed information of violence, slurs, and sex scenes There is much drug usage throughout the book, being a major background theme The frequent drug usage may act as a trigger to those with addictions, especially since it deals with opioids The sexual assault was also rather detailed. When the book started, my first impression of Blake came from when he said that Mei Ru Jya was too hard to remember Blake then asked if he could give Ru Jya an English name Ru Jya agrees, and Blake calls him Sam This action gave me a bad impression of the character from the get go because I found that to be quite rude You are in someone s country, and you ask to call them something else because it is hard to remember I was just taken completely aback by this However, there was major growth in the character concerning this in the story, even though Blake continued to call him Sam He changes to someone who works hard to learn Chinese There were many characters that had various motivations Not all of them had good intentions, which gave the storydepth and variety There were some characters I loathed But one character, had such growth that I ended up liking them I think this is a good sign of character development and creation I like how the piece seemed to be built off parts of historical China It did take place in the 90s, and I cannot speak to the accuracy, but the opium usage seems true I was interested in the cultural aspects that the book brought on as well The translations were also useful when those were speaking in foreign languages because I did not feel I was missing out on conversation.I also felt that the action wasof a telling rather than a showing, which made the book feel slower to me However, the book picked up some speed toward the middle Overall, I think it is an enjoyable novel, and those who are into this type of book, like action drama and semi historical fiction, would love this book It is just not something I would typically go for myself This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here Within the first few pages of Pipe Dreams a Tale of Seduction his character was introduced in the prologue was intriguing to me, but then once I began Chapter One, I was uninterested The first few characters introduced are Li Chen, Hang Su, Li Ping, Li Quran, Sun Ho, Tian Wei, Tang Wen, and Kung Li Ping is the main character for most of this section as she is the one who gets an abortion, is disowned by her family and shipped off to live with her aunt While with her aunt Li Ping tries to run away and basically gets kidnapped, gang raped and sold to Kung who trains and uses her for entertainment for his business I didn t like Li Ping s character when I was first introduced to her and while I felt bad about what was happening with her, I didn t feel bad FOR her because I had no real reason to like or care for her I felt no connection to her or any of the other characters that had been introduced in the first couple of chapters Eventually I was okay with Li Ping and in the end was glad she managed to escape the life she had been forced into.Later when Nicklaus finally comes back into Book One again I m interested in his character only to quickly become bored with it His conversations with his father, uncle and even grandfather are very flat No emotions Nothing Later when he converses with others I still feel like he shows no emotion Towards the very end in Book Three is when I FINALLY feel like Nicklaus has a personality and shows emotions I didn t find that any of the characters had much personality to be honest which is why it was hard for me to connect to any of the characters While some of their situations were sad, like Li Pings, I had no real emotion over what was happening Su Ming is probably the only character that I cared for and then I guess Nicklaus, I didn t care about anyone else and honestly felt very little for Nick I felt bad for Su Ming secretly loving Nick I didn t care for Nick cheating on his wife with Li Ping, I know he justified it as she had an affair so I can have one , but I didn t appreciate it When Su Ming s mother passed I thought that there would should beemotion from Su Ming, but she really didn t have any emotion over her death Later evencharacters are introduced and by the end of the book there are so many characters and plot lines that it s slightly annoying trying to keep up with them all There were times when I forgot who was related to who Something I would definitely recommend the author changing is the formatting of the chapters Also, paragraph transitions, there is no real transition between paragraphs and the author just uses to break up sections The is in there so much throughout the book it s ridiculous I think the author did a good job tying in all of the characters with each other, but I wasn t a fan of having so many characters and subplots I liked the pictures within the book s and the font used for the chapter titles I think the characters needpersonality The idea behind the story is a good one, and things intertwine nicely, but I didn t like it It took me a while to finish it.I was upset about Su Ming being taken to trial because of Nicklaus and I was upset that it took Nicklaus so long to realize that Li Ping had been using him and that Su Ming should be who he was with Then again, he s a man and they aren t very smart when it comes to love issues and Li Ping is great with manipulation Ting Ting is another master manipulator It was sad to see Li Chen die since he was reunited with Li Ping and they were becoming family again, but I wasn t surprised by his death All in all, it was a decent read, but not one of my favorites I m glad Li Ping got her happily ever after and that Su Ming got hers as well Three out of five stars Jeffrey Fischmann s Pipe Dreams is a thrilling, exciting, and absorbing novel that will take all your simple story and grows into this spicy tale with characters that are not only wild in their roles but also uniquely created You will notice that every major figure in the book has that distinctive trait that sets them apart from others The book is set in different parts of Asia The reader gets the chance to virtually traverse the beautiful lands of China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, reading through tragedies that befall the characters and how they survive One thing the reader is guaranteed is a fascinating story with action, drama, twists, and turns.Nicklaus Blake is a character you love to see We follow him as he gets to Tianjin, lives his life, and gets entangled in a world different from what he knew Blake is that character you want to read aboutoften because, despite his shortcomings, he still gets to be likable I like Jeffrey Fischmann s writing as the storyline advances as he introduces the reader to different sides of the Chinese culture Jeffrey Fischmann s narration is exceptional making one wish to visit East Asia Blakes s relationship with people close to him is peculiar His relationship with women especially gets to be weird sometimes as situations defeat him Li Ping was one of the characters I enjoyed reading about in the book She first came off as a spoilt brat but reading on, I got a different impression of her Her beauty, relationship with Sun Ho and the fear she had for her father, made her charming character Li Ping was a logical character when it suited her I acknowledge how Jeffrey Fischmann developed his characters One would think they know so much about a particular character only to be hit with something different as the novel advanced The plot in Pipe Dreams is distinct You need to follow the story as it involves different storylines keenly The book is captivating as the author filled the chapters with family drama, suspense, stirring conversations among characters, and a super exciting plot The plot twists are notable The author s style of not revealing everything during the early stages of the story is a creative way of making the reader yearn forThere is no dull moment in the story as the characters are always up to something Su Ming is another character I love She was not aggressive and tried to be modest Her dedication to her duties was admirable Jeffrey Fischmann s Pipe Dreams shows how vast China is You learn about the history of different Asian countries and how people uphold traditions Reading this book is not only entertaining but also informative The entwined plots were a great way of making the story a little complex but still exciting to follow I recommend Pipe Dreams to readers that appreciate historical Asian fiction stories, drama, and thrillers
